AI Vendor Data Policy Comparison: What Solo Builders Need to Know

When you’re a solo builder leveraging AI tools, you’re constantly asking the same unspoken question: “Am I safe sharing this?”

And the real answer often depends not just on what you share, but where you share it. Different AI vendors handle your data very differently. This post is your solo builder cheat sheet for understanding who sees your data, what happens to it, and how you can make smart trade-offs.

TLDR: The Quick Vendor Snapshot

VendorCan staff see my data?Is my data used for model training?Best Use Case
ChatGPT (Free)✅ Possibly✅ (unless opted out)Non-sensitive research, casual queries
ChatGPT (Pro / Team / Enterprise)❌ (enterprise-level controls)❌Sensitive business work
Claude (Anthropic Pro / Team)❌❌Privacy-forward coding and strategy work
Gemini (Google)✅ (limited staff access)✅General queries, documentation help
Ollama (Local AI)❌ (fully local)❌Highly sensitive data processing

1. ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Free Tier

  • Training: Your conversations contribute to model improvement by default.
  • Visibility: Support staff may have access for safety monitoring.
  • Control: You can disable chat history to minimize retention, but not eliminate risk.

Pro, Team, Enterprise

  • Training: Data not used for model training.
  • Visibility: Stronger access controls at Team and Enterprise levels.
  • Best For: Any serious solo builder work where privacy matters.

2. Claude (Anthropic)

  • Training: Claude Pro and Team do not train on your data.
  • Visibility: Access controls minimize staff access.
  • Strength: Clear, user-friendly privacy policies focused on data safety.
  • Best For: Private code reviews, architectural brainstorming, draft product strategy.

3. Gemini (Google)

  • Training: Data is generally used for model improvement.
  • Visibility: Google staff may access prompts for quality/safety.
  • Note: Gemini is improving privacy options but lags behind Claude and OpenAI enterprise offerings.
  • Best For: Research, documentation lookups, casual AI use.

4. Ollama (Local AI)

  • Training: No training. No data leaves your device.
  • Visibility: No external access.
  • Strength: Perfect for local-first solo builders prioritizing data sovereignty.
  • Best For: Processing sensitive data locally; safe zone for anything you’d never upload to the cloud.

The Human Reality: It’s a Spectrum, Not a Binary

There is no perfectly “safe” or “unsafe” AI platform. Every solo builder has different trade-offs depending on:

  • The nature of your data
  • The sensitivity of your business
  • Your technical comfort level
  • Your trust in the vendor’s governance model

My personal rule:

The more customer data or proprietary insight I’m including, the higher level of vendor control I require.

The Business Impact

  • ✅ I confidently use AI for code, configs, architecture, and documentation.
  • ✅ I escalate to Team or Enterprise tiers before feeding AI anything strategically sensitive.
  • ✅ I use Ollama for full local processing when data sensitivity is extremely high.
  • ✅ I maintain full auditability over where my data flows.

What This Means for Solo Builders

You can absolutely go full-stack AI as a solo builder—and still be responsible. The difference is understanding which vendor policies allow you to safely scale your ambitions without exposing your customers or yourself.

Next Steps You Can Take Today

  1. Map out which AI vendors you’re using right now.
  2. Audit what kind of data you’re sharing with each.
  3. Upgrade to Team or Enterprise tiers if you’re using AI for strategic work.
  4. Use Ollama or other local models for highly sensitive workloads.
  5. Review vendor privacy policies quarterly as the industry evolves.

The only unsafe AI use is uninformed AI use.

As solo builders, we have the advantage of being nimble—which means we can set these guardrails now and move aggressively without fear.
